Frequently asked questions
About the directory, the license data (checked Oct 21, 2026) and claiming a listing.
Where does Licensed Illinois get its data?
From the IDFPR Professional Licensing dataset on data.illinois.gov (version of October 19, 2026), checked Oct 21, 2026. See the data sources page.
Who is listed?
Licensed CPAs, registered CPAs and public accounting firms whose IDFPR record is Active, not past its expiration date, with an Illinois address: 32,020 listings.
Why are registered CPAs labeled 'registered, not licensed'?
They hold a current IDFPR registration rather than a license. They may use the CPA title, but only licensed CPAs may sign audit reports. City pages count licensed CPAs and firms only.
Why can't I find a CPA in the directory?
Their record may be not renewed, inactive, past its expiration date, or have an address outside Illinois. Check a CPA searches every public accountant record in the IDFPR data.
Do listings show discipline?
Yes. Every disciplinary action IDFPR records for a license (case number, action, dates and reason) is shown on the listing and in Check a CPA.
How do I claim my listing?
Licensees, registrants and authorized firm staff can claim free at /for-cpas/claim/. Verification is by a code sent to an email on the firm's own website domain, or by uploading a document; every claim is reviewed.
How do I update a claimed listing later?
Use /for-cpas/edit/: ask for a one-time owner code sent to the email on your claim, then submit changes. Edits are reviewed.
How do I correct a listing?
Claim it to update contact details, or email [email protected]. License facts come only from IDFPR data, so changes to those are made with IDFPR.
What does a quote request do?
It stores your request for up to 12 months and shares it only with up to 3 licensed Illinois CPAs who have claimed their listing and opted in to requests.
How often is the data updated?
IDFPR updates the dataset on data.illinois.gov regularly; every page shows the version date (Oct 19, 2026) and the date we checked it (Oct 21, 2026).
