Illinois CPA discipline records: what IDFPR publishes

How IDFPR records discipline against Illinois CPAs and CPA firms, which actions appear in the data, and how to read them on a listing.

Checked against sources on Oct 21, 2026

Short answer. IDFPR's open data flags disciplined records and lists each action with a case number, action type, start and end dates and a reason. 386 public accountant records carry action details; reprimands, fines, suspensions, probation and revocations are the most common.

What the data shows

For each public accountant record, IDFPR’s Professional Licensing dataset has an “ever disciplined” flag and, per action, a case number, the action, start and end dates and a reason. In the data checked Oct 21, 2026, 386 records list at least one action and 100 of them are current listings on Licensed Illinois.

How to read an action on a listing

Each action shows the action type, the date it took effect (and ended, if IDFPR gives an end date), the IDFPR case number and the reason as IDFPR wrote it. The record’s current status is shown separately: a CPA can have past discipline and a current, active license.

Orders and complaints

IDFPR publishes monthly discipline reports. Its check-a-license page says disciplinary documents can be requested through a FOIA request. Complaints can be filed with IDFPR online.

Questions

Is CPA discipline public in Illinois?

Yes. IDFPR's open data lists disciplinary actions with case numbers, dates and reasons, and IDFPR publishes monthly discipline reports.

Does past discipline mean a CPA can't practice?

Not necessarily. Check the current status: many disciplined CPAs have an Active license after a fine, reprimand or completed suspension.

IDFPR says disciplinary documents can be requested through a FOIA request; its monthly discipline reports summarize actions.
